What Are Zygomatic Implants?

Zygomatic implants can be used independently or with traditional dental implants to achieve comprehensive dental rehabilitation. They are surgically placed in the zygomatic or zygoma bone (cheekbone), which is denser than the maxillary jawbone, thereby providing exceptional stability and support for new replacement teeth.

Due to placement in your cheekbone, zygomatic implants are longer than standard dental implants. Although zygomatic implants have been used for several decades and have excellent clinical outcomes, placement requires meticulous diagnostic planning and significant surgical training and experience. You’re in able, trusted, and skilled hands when you choose Dr. Hashemian for zygomatic implants in Spring Hill, Lecanto, Land O’ Lakes, and Clearwater, FL!

Who Qualifies for Zygomatic Dental Implants?

Since being introduced in the late 1980s, zygomatic implants have been used with increasing frequency in patients with severe posterior maxillary resorption and insufficient bone for traditional implant placement. They’re also viable for patients who have failed prior implant surgery or bone grafting procedures.

The implants are available in different sizes and have a 45° angle that compensates for the angulation between the cheekbone and upper jawbone. If you have moderate, advanced, or extreme resorption in your upper jaw with inadequate bone structure to support standard dental implants, you may be an ideal candidate for these highly specialized dental implants in Spring Hill, Lecanto, Land O’ Lakes, and Clearwater, FL!

What to Expect When You Get Zygomatic Implants

As with any dental implant surgery performed at Dentofacial & Cosmetic Surgery Institute, the first step is an oral exam and 3D images taken with our cone-beam computed tomography scanner. This analysis of bone structure, nerve tissue, and sinus cavities helps guide precision implant placement.

Implant surgery is performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation. If teeth need to be extracted before zygomatic implant placement, Dr. Hashemian can usually remove them during the same appointment. Typically, the process requires two zygomatic implants in combination with two to four traditional implants.

The extra-long implants are placed near your bicuspid teeth (fourth and fifth teeth from the center of the mouth to the back of your mouth). Since zygomatic implants are placed in a single procedure with minimal trauma to surrounding structures, postoperative pain should be minor.

Zygomatic dental implants enable transitioning from a toothless grin or ill-fitting dentures to a teeth-in-a-day complete smile, such as all-on-X full mouth dental implants. After placing your dental implants, we fit you with a temporary implant-supported denture. You’ll come in for periodic follow-up visits so our team can check your gums and implants to ensure healing is progressing.

After all the implants have fused with your underlying bone over three to six months, you’ll be fitted with permanent teeth fabricated from beautiful zirconia. If you have severe bone resorption, zygomatic implants enable living a better quality of life with a complete smile, often for a lifetime!
