Experience Enhanced Healing and Recovery with Platelet-Rich Plasma

At Dentofacial & Cosmetic Surgery Institute, we invest in the latest technologies and techniques to ensure patients are comfortable during surgical procedures and recovery is quick and complication-free. We offer platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in Spring Hill, Lecanto, Land O’ Lakes, and Clearwater, FL, a tissue regeneration approach with a demonstrated ability to promote healing in many procedures. PRP is widely used in various surgical fields, including head and neck surgery, otolaryngology, cardiovascular surgery, and maxillofacial surgery. PRP is especially effective for older patients because natural healing processes are typically less efficient and slower as we age.

PRP derives from centrifugation of less than two ounces of blood drawn from patients. During wound healing, platelets are among the first cells to respond at a wound site, playing a central role in initiating this process. Platelets perform many functions, including forming a blood clot and releasing growth factors (GF) into wounds. Various growth factors derived from PRP are instrumental in hard- and soft-tissue healing, making PRP treatment an invaluable adjunct therapy in regenerative medicine. In simple terms, PRP enables your body to take advantage of normal healing pathways at a greatly accelerated rate.

The Versatility of PRP in Dentistry and Oral Surgery

PRP is effective with bone grafting for dental implants, including onlay and inlay grafts, sinus lift procedures, and ridge augmentation procedures. Tooth extraction can result in significant postoperative pain, particularly when impacted wisdom teeth are extracted.

Research shows PRP treatment improved soft tissue healing, reduced pain, and decreased the incidence of swelling and complications (e.g., dry sockets and acutely inflamed sockets) in patients who underwent wisdom tooth extraction. Other dental applications for PRP include:

01

Closure of cleft, lip, and palate defects

02

Mandibular reconstruction

03

Repair of bone defects resulting from tooth extraction or small cysts

04

Repair of fistulas between the sinus cavity and mouth

05

Regenerative endodontics (e.g., pulpotomy, apical surgery)

06

Treatment of periodontal defects and periodontal plastic surgery

The PRP Treatment Process

During your initial consultation, our oral and maxillofacial surgeon and medical doctor, Dr. Michael Hashemian, will evaluate you and ask about your medical history, current conditions, and medications. While most patients qualify for PRP treatment in Spring Hill, Lecanto, Land O’ Lakes, and Clearwater, FL, anyone with a bleeding disorder or hematologic disease isn’t a candidate for this in-office procedure.

During an outpatient surgical procedure, a small amount of your own blood is drawn out via an IV. Your blood is then placed into a centrifuge to separate the plasma from the red blood cells. A second centrifuge is used to concentrate the platelets, which contain the growth factors. A high concentration of PRP is then applied to the surgical area.

Dramatically Faster Healing is Well Worth the Investment

Although a growing body of scientific articles has shown the efficacy of PRP for various applications, insurance companies consider ortho-biologics such as PRP to be experimental or investigational. The good news is that without insurance documentation to worry about, you can get this therapy without delay.

We offer dental financing from various third-party companies and can help you find the best plan to cover the out-of-pocket cost. For most patients, faster healing and recovery are well worth the upfront investment!
